Foods That Can Make Your Mood Better Many of us believe that comfort foods are bad for us and that we have to avoid them. At times, if your comfort food is a sugary food or another junk food, this is true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be completely healthy and it’s good for you to eat them. A number of foods really do elevate your mood when you eat them. If you feel a little bit down and in need of an emotional pick me up, try a number of these. Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually terrific at dealing with depression. You must be sure, however, that what you make includes the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, particularly the egg yolks, are full of B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be terrific for elevating your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–function better. Try to eat an egg and feel better! Make a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all helpful for raising your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The more of it in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Nuts, on top of improving your mood, can be a super protein source. If you would like to overcome depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all high in omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can seriously raise your mood. Grains can be wonderful for fighting a terrible mood. Quinoa, barley, millet, etc are great at helping you have a happier mood. They fill you up better and that can help improve your moods too. Feeling starved can be a real downer! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not difficult to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood. Your mood could actually be helped by green tea. You were simply expecting to read that, weren’t you? Green tea has been found to be rich in an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies prove that this specific amino acid can actually induce brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while at the same time relaxing the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not difficult to be healthy when you drink green tea. And now you are aware that green tea can help improve your mood as well! Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you are wanting to help your moods get better. Test out these tips instead!
