Foods That Make Your Mood Better In general, people have been trained to think that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and must be avoided. Sometimes, if the comfort food is candy or some other junk food, this holds true. Otherwise, comfort foods may be really healthy and good for you. There are some foods that, when you consume them, can boost your mood. If you feel a little bit down and in need of an emotional pick me up, try several of these. Eggs, you might be surprised to find out, are great at combating depression. You must see to it, though, that what you make includes the egg yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolks especially, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can be fantastic for lifting up your mood. This is because the B vitamins improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that affect how you feel). Consume an egg and jolly up! Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all great for raising your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which boosts your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that directs your brain how you feel all the time. The higher your serotonin levels, the more pleasant you will feel. Nuts, in addition to raising your mood, can be a super source of protein. Cold water fish are great if you wish to feel happier. Wild salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and tuna are all high in omega-3s and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight back depression. It’s easy to fight your bad mood when you consume grains. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all actually excellent for helping boost your happiness levels. These foods can help you feel full for longer too, helping you feel better. It’s not difficult to feel a little bit off when you feel hungry! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are not hard to digest. You digest them more quickly than other foods which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise. Green tea is actually good for your mood. You were sure green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is packed full of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies prove that this specific amino acid can actually induce brain waves. This helps better your mental focus while calming the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not difficult to get healthy when you drink green tea. Now you know that green tea can elevate your mood too! Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you are wanting to help your moods get better. Try some of these instead!
